History of the Woodward Avenue Jazz Orchestra

The Woodward Avenue Jazz Orchestra, a 20-member big band based in Royal Oak, formed in the mid 1990’s as an outgrowth of the South Oakland Concert Band. The South Oakland Concert Band is a community band also based in Royal Oak. The group was founded by Betty Hixson and consisted of members from the community band who enjoyed performing jazz. From those beginnings, the group grew to become its own sister organization to the Royal Oak Concert Band (ROCB), the renamed community band. 

The Woodward Avenue Jazz Orchestra (WAJO) has grown over the years from performing a few pieces during the intermission of ROCB concerts, to having its own set during each performance. WAJO has performed in the community at various senior living centers all over Metro Detroit, outdoors in parks on summer concert series and at fundraisers and festivals. WAJO has worked with a variety of soloists and choirs, performing jazz from the big band era to contemporary standards. Directed by James Cann, the Woodward Avenue Jazz Orchestra is comprised of volunteer members from all walks of life. The group meets from September through June to present concerts with the ROCB, as well as present independent performances. 

The Woodward Avenue Jazz Orchestra is a vibrant, engaging ensemble that performs a variety of genres of jazz. WAJO is the heart of jazz in the city of Royal Oak.
